Based
on results from the T.J. Maxx Talent Opportunity Program
(TOPs) 2005 National Testing, which helps identify the
country's top 9-, 10- and 11-year-old female gymnasts,
71 gymnasts have been named to the 2005 T. J. Maxx National
TOPs Team (9-11 years old) and will participate in the
T.J. Maxx National TOPs Training Camp, Dec. 4-6, at USA
Gymnastics' National Team Training Center in Huntsville,
Texas. In addition, 51 7-8 year olds were named to the
Diamond Level of the T.J. Maxx TOPs National Team.
The 71 represent the top 9-11 year old performers from
the 300-plus gymnasts who qualified for the national testing
program through state and regional testing, which included
more than 3,100 gymnasts. Advancement to national testing
and team selection is based on testing scores. State and
regional testing is conducted for gymnasts 7-11 years
of age, with the 9-11 year olds eligible to advance to
national testing. The best 7 and 8 year-olds qualify for
the Diamond Level based on their test scores from state
and regional testing.
During the training camp, the 9-11 year old members of
the T.J. Maxx National Team and their coaches train under
the eye of USA Gymnastics' national training staff, of
who provide feedback and suggestions for future training.
Each of the national team members receives a leotard and
warm-up from GK Elite. While the 7-8 year olds do not
attend the camp, they do receive national team apparel
and their coaches attend the camp.
T.J. Maxx TOPs is a talent search and educational opportunity
for female gymnasts, ages 7-11, and their coaches and
parents. With a rich, 14-year history, this developmental
program has certainly proven itself over the years. Of
the current members on the Women's National Team, more
than 50 percent were TOPs participants. In fact four of
the 2004 silver-medal-winning Olympic Team were TOPs graduates,
and each was awarded the National TOPs athlete of the
year distinction.

USAG National TOPs Team Samantha
Shapiro and Hallie Mossett
The
2004 USA Gymnastics Talent Opportunity Program
(TOPs) will have three team members from All
Olympia Gymnastics Center attending their annual
camps in Huntsville, Texas this December:
Samantha
Shapiro and Hallie Mossett will be among the 60
girls (ages 9-11) selected to TOPs Team A, and
Delaney Brow earned a spot on TOPs Team B.
USA
Gymnastics, the national governing body of the
sport in the United States, conducts an annual
talent opportunity program to identify young
gymnasts who have the ability to excel in the
sport. Through a series of tests, USA Gymnastics
identifies approximately 20 gymnasts in each
age group, 7-11, to make up the TOPs National
Team. TOPs Regional testing took place throughout
the summer and approximately 3,000 gymnasts
participated. From those regional participants,
310 gymnasts from around the country were invited
to the TOPs National Testing held in Huntsville,
Texas, Oct. 2-4, 2004 at the USA Gymnastics
National Team Training Center. The two-day tryout
included physical abilities tests such as pull
ups, leg lifts, flexibility, sprint, rope climb,
vertical jump, push ups and press handstands
as well as perform required skills on each of
the events including vault, uneven bars, balance
beam and floor exercise. Of the National Test
attendees, approximately 60 gymnasts were selected
for the TOPs National A Team, and approximately
90 gymnasts were invited to TOPs Team B camp.
As an added personal achievement Sami (11 years
old) earned the highest overall score in the
country for her age division, and Hallie (9
years old) earned the national best skills score
in her age division!
Earning
a spot on the TOPs National Team is quite an
accomplishment. As a reward for their arduous
efforts, TOPs Team athletes, accompanied by
their coaches, earn the right to train at Bela
Karolyi's Ranch in Texas for 4-days! Gary Anderson,
the USA Gymnastics National Elite Program Chairman,
commented on National Camp by saying, "This
really is a gathering of the girls who will
become America's elite female gymnasts. The
girls you see at National Camp will be showing
up in the Olympics in 2008 and 2012." Most
of the 2004 Women's Gymnastics Olympic Team
members were TOPs Team athletes. With this in
mind, we are certainly proud to have three girls
from AOGC representing Southern California at
this year's TOPs camps. Congratulations girls
and thanks to our phenomenal coaches for a job
well done!

The
2003 USA Gymnastics Talent Opportunity Program
(TOPs) will have three representatives from All
Olympians attending their annual camp in Huntsville,
Texas in December. Mattie Larson, Samantha Shapiro,
and Jennifer Nguyen will be among the 76 girls
(ages 9-11) from across the country working out
at Bela Karolyi's camp for three days. A fourth
gymnast from All Olympians, Hallie Mossett, has
also made the TOPs team as an 8 year old. AOGC
is hopeful she (and others) will be attending
the camp next year when they are age eligible.
Mattie,
Sami, and Jenny qualified for the camp by attending
the National testing event in October at Karolyi's
gym. The two day tryout involved both "physical"
and "skills" testing. Physical testing
included pull-ups, push-ups, sprint, rope climb,
vertical leap, press handstands, leg lifts, and
shoulder and leg flexibility. The skills testing
included vault, bars, beam dance, beam acro, floor
dance and floor acro. 300 gymnasts attended the
tryout of which 76 were selected. As an added
personal achievement both Mattie (11 years old)
and Sami (10 years old) garnered the highest overall
scores in the country in their age divisions!
The
TOPs program allows the gymnasts to be coached
and evaluated by National Team coaches as well
as other top coaches who are invited to attend.
Each gymnast who qualifies is accompanied by their
coach from their own gym. This allows their coach
to observe and learn new techniques that they
may not otherwise have an opportunity to see and
to take that information back to their home gym.
Nearly
half of the current USA National Team was at one
time a TOPs Team member. With this in mind we
are certainly proud to have three girls from AOGC
representing Southern California at this years
TOPs camp. Way to go girls! written
